ffdshow is DirectShow and VFW codec for decoding/encoding many video and audio formats, including DivX and XviD movies using libavcodec, xvid and other open-sourced libraries with a rich set of post-processing filters.
FFDShow doesn't include a media player or container parsers. After installation, FFDShow decoder will be automatically used by compatible DirectShow or VFW media players such as Media Player Classic, Winamp or Windows Media Player. Therefore, you don't need to install separate codecs for various formats supported by FFDShow.
NOTE:
The development of FFDShow has been discontinued in May 2006. The new release is developed under project named FFDShow Tryouts as a fork, where bug fixes, stability fixes, new features and codec updates continue.
